Mental Health First Aid
 health and social care training
Background to Mental Health First Aid

A key aim of England’s mental health policy is to raise public awareness of mental health and illness and to promote positive mental health and well-being. NIMHE, on behalf of the Care Services Improvement Partnerships National Programme for Mental Health & Well-Being (www.csip.org.uk) is taking forward England’s Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training initiative in England. www.mhfaengland.co.uk
 MHFA originated in Australia, developed by Betty Kitchener & Professor Tony Jorm (http://www.mhfa.com.au/). Training is primarily concerned with raising awareness of the importance of mental health and to promote recovery of those who might be experiencing mental ill health. The aims of the MHFA training are to:
  • preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others;
  • provide help to prevent the mental health problem developing into a more serious state;
  • promote recovery of good mental health;
  • provide comfort to a person suffering a mental illness.
The 12 hour MHFA course that has been developed looks at the needs of adults who have developed or may be at risk of developing mental health problems. Twelve hours is the minimum requirement for delivery of this course.
In order to simplify the costings to accommodate all size of organisations, a flat fee per participant will be charged, this will include the NIMHE booklet (£5 per copy) and all other materials. Due to some organisations receiving subsidies for the workshop the cost will be negotiated on an individual basis.  In order to run an effective workshop there will be a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 18 participants.
To assist in the delivery will be:-
  • Bally Singh a qualified JNC Youth Worker and Social Worker, currently working within a creative based project supporting hard to reach adolescents and young people from Black and Minority Ethnic groups in the North West.
  • Sarah Silvester a Mental Health Nurse with over 15 years of supporting people within ward based environments but over the last 10 years within their own homes around Hertfordshire & Essex.
  • Tracey-Jo Simpson is a Learning Disability Nurse with over 15 years experience of supporting individuals within their own homes whilst also providing training & consultancy support over the country, as a Freelance Consultant for the past 9 years.
We would be only too pleased to discuss your organisation's requirements, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Instructors below:-
